Volunteering Opportunities

Wolcott Mill Historic Center offers many volunteer opportunities.  Our volunteers provide many fields of expertise and assistance to allow the center to carry on its programming, educational endeavors, and operation.  Without this help, the staff would not be able to accomplish much of what is done each year for the benefit of the public and the Metroparks.  Volunteers help in many ways from assisting with programs and crafts to gardening, trail work, woodworking, or Scout projects.  As a part of the mill team, volunteers use their skills to benefit the community or in useful educational activities.

Benefits of Volunteering

The benefits of volunteering vary depending on the amount of time volunteered.  Volunteers working less than 24 hours receive free entry into the park on the day(s) they are working.  Volunteers working 24 hours or more receive an Annual Vehicle Entry Permit for the year that work is done and an annual appreciation lunch. Volunteers working 64 hours a year or more receive a Certificate of Appreciation and a Metroparks Annual Vehicle Entry Permit for the following year and a Metroparks volunteer polo shirt.  Volunteers working 200 hours a year or more are eligible to attend the HCMA Recognition Dinner with a spouse or guest under the same guidelines as an employee.  One volunteer (with a guest) will be selected from each park/parks unit to receive recognition as “Volunteer of the Year” and to attend the Recognition Dinner for free.  They also receive a Metroparks volunteer jacket.

Making Donations

Many historic items found at the mill have come from donations.  This is often the only way such items can be acquired.  Many types of antique items will be accepted. Mill related, agricultural tools and household items are especially welcome.  Many other items are sought for use in programs and crafts.  The mill is currently seeking historic military uniforms for a future exhibit.  Donated items can be tax deductible.  For more information, contact the Historic Center at 586-749-5997.
